Grant Description
Grants of up to $5,000 to North Carolina nonprofit organizations, religious entities, schools, and units of government to respond to local needs in eligible areas. Focus areas for funding include community programming, elementary education, habitat conservation, and basic needs. Funding is intended to benefit Carteret County.
Grants will be awarded from the community grantmaking fund and the:
  • J. O. and Ruth Barbour Memorial Fund for Elementary Education in Carteret County, supporting the reinforcement of Carteret County elementary school instruction in the basics, including reading, writing, arithmetic and penmanship; the acquisition of classroom equipment; compensation of elementary school teachers; and capital improvements to elementary school facilities. Eligible applicants are Carteret County Schools.
  • J. O. and Ruth Barbour Memorial Fund for Wildlife Habitat Conservation supporting conservation projects in Carteret County that contribute to the preservation, maintenance, or reestablishment of woodland and other natural areas that provide suitable and desirable habitats for wildlife, with particular emphasis on birdlife.
  • Pearl's Pantry Fund, supporting humanitarian needs of residents of Carteret County. Proposals for food, prescription medicines, clothing, housing, families in crisis or disaster relief will be reviewed in that order.

The community grantmaking program funds a broad range of purposes to meet local needs that include things like human services, education, youth development, health, food/nutrition, arts, and more.

Applications for specific programs and projects or for general operating support are accepted, unless otherwise specified.

Additional Eligibility Criteria
An organization must meet the following criteria to apply:
• 501 (c)(3) public charity nonprofit organizations registered with the IRS.
• Organizations with a fiscal agent that is a 501(c)(3) public charity nonprofit
• Local governments, including public schools
• Fire and rescue departments
• Religious entities, including churches, congregations and other houses of worship, and/or faith-based organizations whose core functions/operations promote religious doctrine or are restricted to members of a particular faith may apply for funding to support social outreach and charitable service programs to benefit the community-at-large, but they may not apply for general operating support.

Ineligible
Grants are not awarded for:
• Annual fund or capital campaigns
• Political purposes or lobbying
• Activities that are restricted to members of a faith community or promote religious doctrine
• General operating support for religious entities
• Loans
• Reimbursements: This program does not support reimbursement of costs incurred before the deadline for submission of your application. Your request may only include costs that will occur in the future, after the submission deadline of the application.
• For the direct benefit of named individuals
• Re-granting by the applicant organization

An optional workshop is being offered for organizations interested in applying to the North Carolina Community Foundation’s 2025 community grantmaking programs at 10 a.m. on March 7.

This virtual workshop will provide participants with an overview of NCCF’s grant programs, share tips for grant proposals and answer questions about the application process.

Grants typically range from $500 to $5,000.

Term of Contract
Grant recipients have one year from the date of the grant to spend funds awarded by NCCF affiliates.
